During our tenure there, we had exceptional views of Africa’s largest ( Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl ) and smallest ( African Scops Owl ) owls, the largest bird on the planet, not neglecting numerous hornbills, sunbirds and weavers. The first stop was along a narrow dirt track adjacent to some farming land.

Birdmania at the Cano Negro Bird Count, Costa Rica

I spent two full days where the birding was near constant, and, just to keep the binoculars from being neglected, topped it off with another half day of birding on our drive back from Cano Negro, Costa Rica. Just look for the biggest, darkest green spot and that’s the farm, the last sizeable remnant of intact rainforest in the area.

I neglected to take the camera into the courtyard in the beginning, though I did bring the hounds and their beds. The discussion about the environment usually originates in the massive problems created by the factory farming of sentient nonhumans. Violet was spooked early on, but Charles stayed for the entire evening.

The Latin species name hemilasius (half-hairy or half-shaggy) sounds less like a majestic raptor and more like a neglected hippie – but maybe this is deliberate, which I guess would make the bird a hipster. There actually is a study on the effect of wind farms on Chongming Dongtan (where these photos were taken) on Little Egrets.
