I've been trying to find polling data on Proposition2, but this is all I could find. on Prop 2 campaign reports a tidal wave of voter and donor support from Californians backing the effort to stop the cruel and inhumane treatment of animals on industrial factory farms. It's from September 30, from the Humane Society.
Again, thanks to Farmed Animal Net for this update on California's proposition2. California’s Proposition2 is not solely about the California egg business but is also about the egg industry’s national survival, warned Gene Gregory at the annual legislative meeting of United Egg Producers (UEP).
No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “farm animals are regulated under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) only when used in biomedical research, testing, teaching and exhibition. This is really interesting. How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act?
Last week there was a slew of articles about the agreement in Ohio between the farm industry and animal welfare activists to expand cage sizes for calves (veal), hens and pigs. This concession was to avoid a November ballot vote a la California's Proposition2. Well, maybe, although I think there is still a long way to go.
Issue 2 in Ohio would create 13-member state board to oversee the care of farm animals in the State. The Humane Society and other groups oppose it as a power grab by big agriculture to prevent another Proposition2 (the initiative passed last year in California to improve standards for farm animal care.)

I got curious today and googled "Jennifer Fearing," the woman who led the Yes on Proposition2 campaign. Tags: proposition2 california humane society farm animal welfare. I am a firm supporter of reforming factory egg farming. Tags: proposition2 eggs factory farm food chickens. I believe that chickens should have room to stretch and walk around. And I'm willing to pay for more expensive eggs if it allows for that. Not everyone has that luxury.
There is definitely a new tide in California, post Proposition2. Tags: california bile farmingfarm animal welfare agribusiness food. Basically, it sounds like the ag committee will be including food safety and animal welfare concerns in their discussions. The ag industry does NOT like this.
It also does a great job at profiling Jennifer Fearing who led the victory of Proposition2. California really is at the forefront of animal welfare and this is an excellent article detailing what's going on in the State and the challenges animal welfare faces. She sounds amazing.
9): Thank you for encouraging California voters to support the state’s Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, or Proposition2, on the November ballot. Proposition2 is a modest step that deserves voter support and extension to other states. Consumer boycotts and protective laws are desperately needed.
Here is a Los Angeles Times story about California's Proposition2, which passed yesterday. I'm ambivalent about the proposition. On the one hand, it improves the lives of many farm animals. In the long run, measures such as this may make things worse for farm animals.
A Humane Egg The life of animals raised in confinement on industrial farms is slowly improving, thanks to pressure from consumers, animal rights advocates, farmers and legislators. Industrial confinement is cruel and senseless and will turn out to be, we hope, a relatively short-lived anomaly in modern farming.
The meat and dairy industries want to keep their operations away from the public’s discriminating eyes, but as groups like PETA and the Humane Society have shown us in their graphic and disturbing undercover investigations, factory farms are mechanized madness and slaughterhouses are torture chambers to these unfortunate and feeling beings.
I actually read one headline asking whether this was the beginning of the end of commercial farming in California. But to big ag, it's just another step on a slippery slope started by the passage of Proposition2. Tags: california farm animal welfare us agribusiness. A bit of an overreaction I think.
