There are very few reports from sites further afield although with all public and most private parks closed, a birder can’t go to such official protected areas anyways. Casa Tangara dowii, Costa Rica, or over the Misty Mountains cold

Casa dowii is located in Cartago Province, along the Panamerican Highway in the Navarro Sombrero Protected Area that buffers Tapanti and Los Quetzales National Parks. It consists of a small reserve with a well maintained in site trail (over 195 species recorded, many endemic and rare birds accessible), cozy lodging and a dining room.

Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago. The Conboy Lake CCP is here.

Urban Nature Persists in San Joaquin, Heredia, Costa Rica, May 4th, 2021

In birding circles, Costa Rica is better known for protected areas, quetzal tours, and glittering displays of hummingbirds than the things that fly in urban spots. Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals , Downy Woodpeckers. Brown Jays also flutter by and those are just a few of the species that still occur. That makes sense.

The raising of the bins took place along roads through semi-shaded coffee farms and on the grounds of Villa San Ignacio , a hotel with big old wonderful trees and regenerating forest.

I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The ES NERR is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot, drawing birders from around the country and around the globe, all happy to see as many of the over 200 species recorded here as possible. Life-bird for me!

Snow in Costa Rica!

Belonging to the Caribbean foothills biome, Rancho Naturalista has the fourth longest eBird list among the hotspots of Costa Rica: 478 species, including 36 raptors and 38 hummingbirds. Curious to see what the combined list would show, I used the eBird polygon tool to sum them all up to 502 bird species.
