I asked Virginia Guhin, Education Programs Coordinator of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ES NERR). I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. “What’s that?” Guhin knew without binoculars, “ White-tailed Kite ,” she identified.

Keep in mind that the special nature reserves (dark green on the park map) enjoy the highest level of protection and are off limits to visitors (possible only with research permits issued by the park authorities).

Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. Much like my visit to Malheur NWR, the actual wet Land areas are flooded once the cooperative farming is over. Right in our camp, we found Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. US species – 243.
