On some coffee farms, hedgerows can be wonderfully developed tangles of native trees, vines, and introduced plants. Rufous-collared Sparrow. We have House Sparrows too but this bird is much more common. This is our usual sparrow, the one that sings a cheery song from a roadside wire, the ones that forages on the ground.

Known as Calle Los Viquez , this sizeable area of farm fields flanked by housing, its coffee bushes, hedgerows, and weedy fields has become a haven for birds. In the erstwhile sanctuary, common species like Red-billed Pigeon , Blue-black Grassquit , and Rufous-collared Sparrow abound. The habitat looks good for it!

In addition to the Veery I saw or heard a pair of Yellow-billed Cuckoos , some cooperative Eastern Kingbirds , Swamp Sparrows , Warbling Vireos , Wood Thrush , Cedar Waxwings , a Worm-eating Warbler , and, well, you get the idea: it was awesome! Grasshopper Sparrows don’t seem to sing terribly loudly but their song carries a long way.

Wetland Halfway between bustling Belgrade and sleepy Zrenjanin, River Tamis floodzone contains abundant oxbow lakes (turned into fish farms) and salt marshes filled with birds. Fish farms in Baranda and neighbouring Sakule villages, about 40 km / half an hour north of Belgrade, offer likely the best wetland birding near the city.

Back in the old place, there were more birds in the nearby coffee farm but it wasn’t easy to bird because I couldn’t see it from my door and there were stray dogs. Looking a lot like a Carolina , this one tends to be harder to see if just as loquacious, and is common in coffee farms and other low, brushy habitats.

Leaving Fall River, past the local Bank Swallow nesting site , we head over to Rat Farm Road, a hot spot for raptors, leading to Horr Pond and Big Lake. Back at Fall River Lake a Swamp Sparrow ( Melospiza georgiana ) had been reported hanging out for the past few days, but it had been hunkered down and difficult to find. LUCKY ME !
