As mentioned in my previous post , we were hosted for an afternoon session at Jonathan ‘s farm. Coming off a high from our morning boat ride, excitement was high as we pulled into the farm compound. On the slow crawl into the farm, the first sighting was a small group of Green Ibis – a new species for me.
They are places where we invest most of our birding time and rightly so; mature tropical forests are where we find the highest number of species. Additional bird species prefer the sun-drenched vegetation of open fields and other edge habitats. Two habitats especially fun to bird are brushy fields and coffee farms.
Even the most free-wheeling of birders don’t usually consider going to a zoo or a chicken farm a form of birding, but just because they choose to distinguish doesn’t mean they keep a list. As for introduced or reintroduced species it would only count if it was third generation reintroduced. That’s a good question.
Foreboding superstitions about the waxwing persisted into the twentieth century: an irruption of this species in Great Britain during the winter of 1913-1914 was viewed in hindsight as a harbinger of World War I, which broke out the following summer, as depicted in Pestvogel (2016) by American artist Walton Ford (born 1960).
“We had got used to noting a loss of a few per cent in numbers of various species over one or two years. Numbers of linnets, turtle doves and lapwings have crashed as a result… …These losses were described as shocking by the scheme’s chairman, Richard Gregory.
The prospect of identifying a certain number of species in a given amount of time pushes us to pay more attention to birds no matter what the circumstances (although I suggest keeping the exclamations about species identifications to yourself during such solemn situations as funerals, graduations, and watching episodes of The Sopranos).
The very best wetland birding around Belgrade, Serbia, is not to be found in the locally famous and tourist-promoted Obedska or Carska Bara Ramsar areas, but at Beljarica Backwaters and the fish farm triangle of Centa, Baranda and Sakule villages, in the Tamis River floodplain. mi, to the Vrbovski turnoff.
Like my two previous visits I spent one day that I didn’t have to lead any field trips doing a run through central Florida looking for some of the specialty species of the region. On my previous trips I was successful on each and every species except for the crane. The first farm on the left, where all the cattle are?

Almost 230 species have been recorded so far.
Mason Farm is one of the best places for birding in the region, and arguably in the state. Just about every species of bird that had ever been found in the Triangle of North Carolina had been seen at some time or another at Mason Farm. It always amazes me how quiet and sneaky this typically boisterous species gets in the fall.
I’ve continued my inconsistent effort to pick off the species I need for my Monroe County list. eBird) had it that the best place to find Clay-colored Sparrow is a particular conifer plantation on a particular farm road in the rural western portion of the county. In that sense, June is no different than any other month, right?
Robins also seem prone to this indulgent behavior, along with a few other species, but usually it’s tipsy Cedar Waxwings that we read about heading to rehabilitating “drunk tanks”, or sadly, fatally crashing into buildings. Wyndridge Farm Cidery: Crafty Cranberry Hard Apple Cider. Happy drinking and good birding!
Yes, it’s the same species that so many North American birders have looked for around the San Pedro River (myself included) and like those Arizona birds, our urban Gray Hawks likewise use riparian zones. In Costa Rica, the urban raptor can take more than one form but usually, the local avian top predator is a Gray Hawk.
When you see a photo of a Snowcap, it’s easy to see why this species is a perennial top target for birding trips to Costa Rica. However, as with so many other bird species that must be seen to confirm their improbable existence, the Snowcap can be elusive. I’m sure several other species also occur.
Our elevation (1080 to 1150 feet) places us in what is called seasonal rainforest, but we are contiguous to the higher elevation Children’s Eternal Rainforest and connected reserves, comprising almost 250,000 acres of protected habitat from our farm to the top of the cloud forest.
Please note that the illegal bile farm was Taiwanese-owned. I can't read such stuff without being sickened by my species. It's great that they were saved, but t hey arrived at the rescue center in wretched condition. Moon bears are rare, which makes this all the sadder. Again, the China connection. Thank Animals Asia for the rescue.
In our neck of the woods, marking Common Pauraque as the first species of the day, attempting to identify shorebirds in the dark of the night (not easy.), No matter where you live, city or farm, birds will be on the move and some will be calling just before dawn. and listening for owls just before dawn. Catch the dawn chorus.
Since a day that blends high quality coffee and high quality tropical birding understandably ups my quality of life, I always enjoy a visit to “Mi Cafecito “ Mi Cafecito (my little coffee) is a small Costa Rican coffee farm situated in the foothill zone rainforests on Route 126.
Personally, I love exploring new hotspots and discovering new or unusual species when visiting a country. This phase is to familiarize with the species that can be seen. Hoffmann’s Woodpecker.
I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. With 18 species of native Psittacids to choose from, birding in Costa Rica is always a thrill, especially for someone who grew up in parrotless Niagara Falls, New York! At least one of these species has adapted to nesting on buildings and a few others can nest in large parks. The other regular parrot around here is this species.
But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. In December, 1990, a single pair of ducks and some young birds began to feed at the farm of Mr. Willie Ebanks, at Hutland, Northside, in Grand Cayman.
Listed as Near Threatened, this charismatic species has a tiny distribution restricted to central Costa Rica, especially in the Central Valley. It doesn’t require forest but the coffee farms and scrubby green space it does need are under constant pressure of being destroyed and replaced with urban housing.
Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. One of my more memorable New Year’s days was in the Falkland Islands, back in 1989.
Back in the old place, there were more birds in the nearby coffee farm but it wasn’t easy to bird because I couldn’t see it from my door and there were stray dogs. They shared the bushes with three of Costa Rica’s common flycatcher species, each nearly as vocal as the blackbirds. Right at home. Social Flycatcher.
There’s no species of bird more associated with the North American desert than Greater Roadrunner. But Warner Brothers cartoons aside, Greater Roadrunner is a much more adaptable species that we give it credit for. But Warner Brothers cartoons aside, Greater Roadrunner is a much more adaptable species that we give it credit for.
Surrounded by farm land but with a reasonable well vegetated creek running through, the town looked pretty limited in terms of birding potential. I was asked by a new birder about the site’s potential and I remarked we should expect between 40 to 50 species for our circa two kilometre stroll. I was wrong. A male Figbird upon his nest.
There were, however, compensations, such as finding breeding Yellow Wagtails on a nearby farm where I’d never seen them before. WinGS volunteers visit gull roost sites, counting six key species: Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull and Great Black-backed Gull.
They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby. They are rare breeders here, but at least, this species’ numbers are on the increase. A pair of European Turtle Doves on a wire, followed by two soaring Common Buzzards …. I must digress further.

Few if any species are as emblematic of the Neotropics as Ramphastidae, the family that includes the toucans, toucanets, and aracaris. On the trip to Costa Rica that I just returned from I was pleased to see both of those species as well as Black-mandibled Toucan and Keel-billed Toucan. Yeah, it was a heck of a trip.
A single morning birding the thorny desert of Baringo in Kenya’s Rift Valley yielded several species at a rate I at times struggled to keep up with. Lake Baringo and the surrounding desert scrub at just over 3,000 feet elevation is one of the most profitable birding hotspots in the country, boasting approximately 470 species.

The Caribbean Lowlands.
These manmade lagoons in the middle of east Florida farmland and subdivision became bird magnets, as critical for birds and birders as it is for the surrounding communities and farms. If there’s a more elegant species in Florida I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it. They’re coming for the birds.
I was well satisfied to travel through farm country this weekend and count the many American Kestrels perched predatorily above the fields. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a Bushy-crested Jay , one of quote a few fine species he spotted while exploring the area around Copan Ruinas in Honduras. How about you?
