With the proliferation of those erstwhile invaders, House Sparrow , European Starling , and Rock Pigeon , there a lot of homogeneity among these species, which is a shame because what parking lot birds generally lack in beauty they more than make up for in charisma. Though, admittedly, Clark’s Nutcracker would be alright too.

He came out, we grabbed coffees and his car, and awaited the arrival of the third member of our impromptu twitching team, young birding wunderkind Adrian Burke (who I first met when twitching this bird ), fresh off his discovery of multiple Seaside Sparrows by the bike path on the west side of Manhattan a couple of days earlier.

We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela. Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show.
