However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fastfood while waiting for a connecting flight. That is mainly the Philippines, as indicated by the species name lucionensis (Luzon is the Philippines’ biggest island).
Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. For another species, the Firethroat , it meant I only got acceptable views rather than the really good ones reportedly possible a few weeks earlier.
Every part of the world has it’s suite of parking lot staples, those urbanish species that seem to prefer to linger about humanity subsisting in no small amount to the magnanimity, or more likely the laziness, of humankind. And in parts of the Rockies, Clark’s Nutcracker reigns supreme.
Have you ever enjoyed one of those brilliant birding expeditions, the outing where every target species takes its cue with machine precision? But ranches, as you may know, can offer extremely benevolent birding, especially when it comes to grassland species. Every few yards into Aripo encouraged another species to show itself.
By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. What to say?
The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). Like fastfood, but free and likely more healthy.
My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed. We walked through the deep snow – no shoveling park rangers here – and got onto a flock of Red Crossbills almost immediately. I am not a fan of American restaurants.
We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela. The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list. Kingfisher Birdwatching Nuevo León would provide our guides (and the bird photographs for this post – gracias!).
Many of the common species can be seen here, probably in this order; White-eared Bulbul , Red-vented Bulbul , Eurasian Hoopoe , Purple Sunbird , Graceful Prinia , Indian Roller. My personal list for Safa Park runs to 40+, but upwards of 200 species have been recorded here over the years. Gates are open from 08.00am ’til 10.00pm.
The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. From the bulbuls we went in search of another introduced species that has taken to south Florida like home. We needed countable species!
Instead of seeking out their own discoveries they follow in the footsteps of others and seek out species already seen. They wait for others to find birds and they chase them. That is, they twitch. Now, don’t get me wrong. I might have been known to twitch. So twitch less and bird local patches more.
Note to other species: better do not rely on mature primary forests, as this may lead to extinction. This says more about my inability to differentiate between warbler species than about the rarity of the bird – but the bird was kindly singing. Also, do not smoke as it is not good for your health.
We saw Common Gallinules , a nice male Rose-breasted Grosbeak , Bald Eagles , and a Great Horned Owl among the fifty-three species for our checklist. The long drive back to New York was filled by more lousy, incidental eBird checklists, more fastfood, and more road kill. All was not lost though.
Seeing as birds are extremely adaptable creatures as a whole, I have always found it interesting to see which bird species manage to make a living or even thrive among all the concrete, cars, and noise. In fact, several species in Miami-Dade are found exclusively in such habitats.
