They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. Sadly, we weren’t able to join them or the leopard.

During the early 1990s, rumours surrounding the occurrence of a few Egyptian Geese in far north-western Germany emerged, the result of an increasing and spreading Dutch feral population. They did not feature in any of our field guides, and were confined to many a traveler’s Afrotropical dreams. Just a peculiarity.

She turned, looked, and by the expression on her face I guessed she was thinking “Goodness, I’m glad that was not a lion.”. Have you ever seen the Dryfus Lion? I new him because we enlisted his Dryfus Lion and one of his tigers to carry out experiments with bones (this is something archaeologists do). Unless we put them there.

Well, Copenhagen Zoo is back in the news; a few weeks after killing a giraffe and feeding it to some lions, it went and killed some of those same lions. This morning I opened up my iPad, read the Guardian and saw that four lions were killed without reason by a zoo. Losing a few non-breeding lions in zoos a great deal less.

It’s the same reason so many people now cut up their plastic six-pack holders — because the connection between their soda and the strangled sea lion becomes obvious, visual and intimate. It brought the information out of the abstract and into the real, the visceral.

Take lions, wolves, hyenas to name a few. I will admit that there are legitimate concerns that have been raised about falconry – birds that are not native to an area sometimes escape and become feral; humans should minimize their influence on nature. There are many examples in the animal world of pack behavior.
