There is a flock of Wild Turkeys that strut around like they own the place and they might very well be right. After all, there is no hunting and while I watched the turkeys they routed a feral cat that dared come near the flock of twelve which consisted of two tom turkeys and ten hens.

Not only are the individual ducks hard to look at, but in groups, the feral populations create the same messes other masses of waterfowl do. Wicked, right? The word manky means many things in British parlance from dirty and disgusting to inferior and worthless.

If you take a feral pigeon, bleach it and then batik it using the right colors, the result might be a Pink-necked Green Pigeon (1). These birds on Pulau Ubin may well be Red Junglefowl (they have grey feet), but they may also be hybrids – apparently, there is a genomic continuum from feral to wild Red Junglefowl in Singapore.

As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. The Long-tailed Parakeet can sometimes be seen here feeding right next to the Blue-naped Parrot. The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot. Or US$ 8 for the pair below.

In the header photo the Pied Oystercatcher chick is only just to the right of the adult. Feral cats are also a problem in Broome. The Pied Oystercatchers hide the chicks in the thick vegetation once they leave the nest site. This offers a lot more protection than the exposed nest site. In the photo below it is a lot clearer.

They are about the same length (NL 6.2in / 158mm; EL 6.3in / 160mm) and weight (NL 30oz / 850g; EL 29.6oz / 840g), and obviously, the same lens diameter, hence, they should feel the same, right? Nothing can be more wrong. The beauty of birding is that no matter how good you get, you can always find a way to challenge yourself.

We have to understand, though, that this was a natural predator and not one of our introduced feral cats or foxes. The chick is just to the right of the adult bird in the photo below in the shade. The moist Pied Oystercatcher nest site after the thieving. It was not a good result at all and not what we had hoped to find.

In the photo above there is one chick trying to avoid the wind under the vegetation to the right of the tail of the Pied Oystercatcher on the left. In the photo below the chick in front of the adult on the right is rearranging its breast feathers! You can also see that the legs of the chicks are almost as wide as the adults!

It obviously was not quite right and “A1” continued to try and please her for some time. We do not add debris to protect the nests and the main threat to the nests still appears to be feral cats. At no point did the female Pied Oystercatcher aid in the construction of the nest, but she would check it for shape and size.

Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And this one chose to fly right in front of us. It is not an uncommon bird, but being so secretive, I see it only every other year.

The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand.

Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown. Wicked, right? Like manky mallards, ganky geese display remarkable variety due to both the methodical manipulations of breeders and the variable volatility of the more natural kind of breeding. Hat-tip to Stella.

We went this route because he isn't putting weight on his back right leg anymore (you can even see the muscle atrophy--look at the difference--it's not because of the angle). It'll be my area's first group dedicated to reducing the feral cat population! He sure was a trooper, though.
