The birds in Florida, on the other hand, are of domestic stock gone feral. Despite their questionable background, the feral Muscovy Ducks of Florida are on the state checklist, which only makes sense as they have spread across the state wherever people have settled and provided habitat. And why is it still there?
The National Park Service is finally going to remove the feral cat colony from Plumb Beach, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. After all, it takes courage to stand up to the cat crazies and he should be thanked for doing the right thing. Nature lovers, rejoice! Signs like the one above went up late last week.
Here’s hoping that Charles County, Maryland, stands up to the feral cat mafia and moves ahead with plans to require cats be licensed and special “animal fancier” licenses be required for those who harbor ten or more cats on their property.
Still, with the help of various sources, the authors have a try: Ninety million cats live in 46 million American homes; There are 100 million feral cats that live outside and eat mostly wildlife, and 50 million owned cats (i.e., Header image of feral cat with a Golden-crowned Kinglet by Isaac Grant. So here is a nice story and video about a HSUS rescue of a California feral colony. It makes me want to get back into animal rescue, which is where my animal rights activism started. Tags: HSUS california animal rescue feral cats. Haven't been into deep posts at all.
But as of right now there is nowhere in the United States where a birder can see a chicken and count it on his or her list despite the fact that there is a well established and long lasting Feral Chicken population in the Florida Keys. It is time for the Florida Ornithological Society to allow for the counting of Feral Chickens.
After careful consideration of all of the enlightened arguments that have been made by those in favor of Trap-Neuter-Return for feral cats in recent blog posts , we here at 10,000 Birds have been completely convinced by their well-thought-out, logical, and airtight conclusions. Then share our fantastic new organization with your friends!
There is a flock of Wild Turkeys that strut around like they own the place and they might very well be right. After all, there is no hunting and while I watched the turkeys they routed a feral cat that dared come near the flock of twelve which consisted of two tom turkeys and ten hens.
Also, the chances for adding vagrants depend on the occurrence of storms from the right direction during the right season. And last but not least, the ABA list is constantly growing due to the inclusion of escapes and ferals with established, self-sustaining populations.
In this case, the signs were right. Also a sign when I spot other books by the same author on the shelf in the office of a member of my thesis committee, and on my own Christmas wish list. This is a good book. Other signs: Last night, as I was reading this in the bar, a man came up to me and asked about it (please don’t do that.)
And so, when Salvador Ramirez left, there were feral goats on the island of San Clemente, the southernmost of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. No wait, they were, but they had experienced so much genetic drift and selective pressure that they now constituted a unique breed in their own right.
My award-winning picture of a Feral Pigeon was of course taken in Rotterdam. For instance, Lesser Black-backed Gull s have a substantial breeding colony right next to a chemical plant. Heading west on the A15 you will soon realise how far west you actually are: you will pass a sign telling you to turn right for England!
By far the most commonly seen bird on most of the islands in the region – and the only one every islander can identify on call – is Gallus gallus (the feral chicken). Can we find a suitable island free from feral predators that would devastate the introduced species? Guam Rail Gallirallus owstoni. What a horror!
Feral Muscovy Ducks seem to attract many of those epithets. Not only are the individual ducks hard to look at, but in groups, the feral populations create the same messes other masses of waterfowl do. Wicked, right? The word manky means many things in British parlance from dirty and disgusting to inferior and worthless.
If you take a feral pigeon, bleach it and then batik it using the right colors, the result might be a Pink-necked Green Pigeon (1). These birds on Pulau Ubin may well be Red Junglefowl (they have grey feet), but they may also be hybrids – apparently, there is a genomic continuum from feral to wild Red Junglefowl in Singapore.
These waste water treatment plants offer the perfect environment to bird-life due to the fact that water is constantly available and is fenced for further protection from feral animals. They are not an advertised tourist area, but ask any birder and they will point you in the right direction!
As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. The Long-tailed Parakeet can sometimes be seen here feeding right next to the Blue-naped Parrot. The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot. Or US$ 8 for the pair below.
In the header photo the Pied Oystercatcher chick is only just to the right of the adult. Feral cats are also a problem in Broome. The Pied Oystercatchers hide the chicks in the thick vegetation once they leave the nest site. This offers a lot more protection than the exposed nest site. In the photo below it is a lot clearer.
They are about the same length (NL 6.2in / 158mm; EL 6.3in / 160mm) and weight (NL 30oz / 850g; EL 29.6oz / 840g), and obviously, the same lens diameter, hence, they should feel the same, right? Nothing can be more wrong. The beauty of birding is that no matter how good you get, you can always find a way to challenge yourself.
And of course, there is a large number of Rock Doves (feral), particularly near one particular mosque. I did not actually go to Afghanistan for birding. In a barely disguised advertising plug, I will explain more at the end of this post (and probably in some other posts describing my travels in Afghanistan).
We have to understand, though, that this was a natural predator and not one of our introduced feral cats or foxes. The chick is just to the right of the adult bird in the photo below in the shade. The moist Pied Oystercatcher nest site after the thieving. It was not a good result at all and not what we had hoped to find.
Left – 2nd edition, right – 3rd edition So, not much has changed since the 2nd edition? Forget occasional escapees, there is an established feral population successfully breeding in the north of Germany, which was 131 birds strong last year. Yet, still a gauntlet thrown to other publishers, too.
Two days ago I went on Facebook and queried some of my exhausted compatriots: if you could have one wish right now – anything in the world – what would it be? “I I wish for a federal law prohibiting domestic and feral cats from roaming free outdoors. I don’t want to be too hasty in my response,” wrote Gay in Virginia.
By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. a few weeks ago I guided a British couple around Belgrade, visited about four major sites and found more than 60 species.
In the photo above there is one chick trying to avoid the wind under the vegetation to the right of the tail of the Pied Oystercatcher on the left. In the photo below the chick in front of the adult on the right is rearranging its breast feathers! You can also see that the legs of the chicks are almost as wide as the adults!
Yeah, right. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here. I am checking for darker heads and necks, but the sunset is taking over… “How do you manage to tell them apart,” I ask him.
As most people know cats, both feral and domestic, have a pretty big impact on wild birds and other wildlife, and the effect of mammals is particularly profound in New Zealand. Conservation was in the news again in the last few weeks here in New Zealand, and unfortunately not in a good way.
All I know is that the majority of vegetarians, ex-vegetarians, animal rights supporters, animal rescuers, animal shelter volunteers, and feral cat colony stewards that I know are women. Tags: animal rights. It's an intriguing question that would probably get quite a response at any dinner party. Frankly, I don't know.
The group, founded in 2007, also provides a free, full-time spay and neuter clinic for homeless stray and feral cats, plus low-cost, spay and neuter services for tame pet cats. We know funds are tight for many right now, but if you have anything to donate to such a wonderful organization, please do. For more information, visit [link].
It obviously was not quite right and “A1” continued to try and please her for some time. We do not add debris to protect the nests and the main threat to the nests still appears to be feral cats. At no point did the female Pied Oystercatcher aid in the construction of the nest, but she would check it for shape and size.
Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And this one chose to fly right in front of us. It is not an uncommon bird, but being so secretive, I see it only every other year.
Right: Water Pipits landing on my car and sliding down the windscreen. The scorching sun was right above my head. One evening in Brussels, we realized that people from all countries that came out of former Yugoslavia were around the same table once again – all countries but Kosovo. And the day was tropical.
The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand.
mikey, my stance can be seen in the posts about Project Treadstone (and if you type Project Treadstone into the Google Search box just below my half-blind, diabetic greyhound, Violet Rays, on the right, you'll get a dozen more posts).
By the last year of the war, the US increased its military aid to the Greek Government and introduced a new weapon: the first napalm attack after World War II took place right here! Feral Pigeon – Columba livia dom. Even 70 years later, the elders still do not like to talk about it. Eurasian Sparrowhawk – Accipiter nisus.
Every March, hope springs anew that I’ll cross paths with one of these feral fluffballs, but as April ends, so do another year’s delirious dreams. Fortunately, favor smiled upon me this day because I entered Owl Woods right behind a group from the Rochester Birding Association. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.
They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) And so, I went on the American Birding Association Safari to South Africa.
Geographically, species like Common Wood-Pigeon , European Turtle-Dove , or even feral Rock Pigeon seem most likely in this corner of Aquitaine – but for a rosé wine, how about a Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove as a mascot?
You can hear its song in spring, but even then, it is a rare privilege to have one posing at the very ends of willow branches right next to one’s car. Feral Pigeon – Columba livia. In the Bird Identification guide, it is deservedly described as an introvert. A narrow bluff-top buffer zone is also protected.
She has a new book out (which I am reading right now) called One Good Dog. A feral kitten captured and neutered by a small non-profit, somewhat militant organization, was on display at our local Massachusetts Society Prevention of Cruelty Association branch, which often took these feral cats in the hope of finding homes for them.
This is the time of year that we rightfully contemplate the noble Turkey. The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo.
all the time pointing with my right hand while holding the steering wheel with my left, and the hardest thing, keeping my eyes on the road. Feral Pigeon – Columba livia. I screamed “UralOwlUralOwlUralOwl!!!”, Fortunately, B. managed to see it, his largest owl ever. Common Gull – Larus canus.
Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown. Wicked, right? Like manky mallards, ganky geese display remarkable variety due to both the methodical manipulations of breeders and the variable volatility of the more natural kind of breeding. Hat-tip to Stella.
We went this route because he isn't putting weight on his back right leg anymore (you can even see the muscle atrophy--look at the difference--it's not because of the angle). It'll be my area's first group dedicated to reducing the feral cat population! He sure was a trooper, though.
