For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?”
Even better, just a few meters away from the food vendors, it is not too crowded, and the palm trees attract a number of birds, including two species of parrots. That is mainly the Philippines, as indicated by the species name lucionensis (Luzon is the Philippines’ biggest island). The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot.
They range from the successful eradication of feral cats from Marion Island (hear that, Corey?) Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. How do you tell the difference?
Whenever possible we have used our Christmas Day to see how many bird species we can get in our local area and this year was no different. We usually try and plan a route prior to the day with particular bird species in mind and also taking into account the tidal range for the day. We rarely see them so close to town.
They contributed 150 lists accounting for 1032 species and more than 36,000 individual birds. Thus 100 species were missed by the time he woke up and noticed that eBird had reset the counters at midnight(do you guys have nothing better to do?). Zebra Dove – Geopelia striata. They came home exhausted. 01 Dec 2019.
Black-fronted Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Willie Wagtails ran along the muddy edges where there was evidence of feral pigs. Brolga , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves , Little Corellas , Zebra Finch , Cockatiels, Budgerigars and Galahs were present early in the morning and late in the afternoon when they came in to drink.
For Borneo I’ll be accepting the split endemic species listed in Myers (2009), some of which I think eBird could at least offer as subspecies options (I’d also welcome an eBird app that works). Species are listed by family according to the order eBird spits them out to me in. Indigo Flycatcher. COLUMBIDAE (PIGEONS).
