Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. Like the Rockies, though, this is a harsh beauty, not an ideal climate for the human animal by any means.

The ASPCA recommends taking “steps to limit possible transmission from humans to pigs and vice versa.&# Ferrets and birds are susceptible. Ferrets and birds may develop swine flu, or other human flu viruses. Pet pigs may contract swine flu. Influenza Type A vaccines are available for pigs.

As the name suggests, they rescue rabbits, but they also rescue other small animals like ferrets, and other small rodents. To accommodate the sanctuary rabbits, our adoption center and our compassionate human visitors, Rabbit Meadows plans to build a series of small cottage-like structures among the picturesque fir trees on its grounds.

The conference was for animal lovers, and it wasn’t just humans present! Dogs, cats, and ferrets, as well as “flat pets” and plush pets that represented real pets that didn’t make the trip. We just returned from a fun, furry, weekend in Salt Lake City for the BlogPaws conference. We wanted to say Thank YOU!

It’s that time of the year again when the humans start sniffling and sneezing! Not just dogs though, pet birds, ferrets, and even pet rats are all able to catch a cold from a person. Dogs who have colds exhibit similar symptoms to humans; lethargy, sneezing, runny noses, and watery eyes.

Last night I lay awake from 4 am til almost 5, worrying about the black-footed ferrets I met in Montana and the humans who had devoted their lives to helping them. The environment is currently facing some of the most massive challenges in recent human history, and for the first time we have the knowledge to do something about that.

It’s one thing to decide that among humans, the most successful relationships are those that end in a mortality event, although even then it’s a little morbid. Besides the black-footed ferrets, one of the promised highlights of my trip to the Charles M. But we really need to leave birds out of it.
