A month later I had the chance to watch these impressive birds again, fishing off Cape Trafalgar in southern Spain. It’s rare to see the Gannets fishing close to the nesting cliffs, as their favoured prey are big fish such as Cod, Mackerel and Herring that are found in deeper waters farther offshore.

It appears to be successful at catching small fish. The water is clear and it would be easy for the Little Egret to see the fish that are present. The Brown Fish Owl is the most common of all Fish Owls. Much to my surprise, he could, all within an hour`s drive of my hotel in Delhi (which after all is a contender for the most populous city in the world, similar to Shanghai, where I live). Its ear tufts seem to be almost horizontal rather than vertical.

A few days ago, I saw a Yellow Bittern trapped in a fishing device. Striated Heron : Small and known for dropping items on the water surface in order to attract fish. Advice to the species: avoid fish nets. The bird got very nervous when I approached, trying to strike me with its beak through the net.

Until now our narrow cross-over had not coincided, but on a recent trip to Buenos Aires, I was delighted to get close views from the rubble beach at Costanera Sur as a single bird fished close to the shore. It caught a couple of fish as I watched and swallowed them without ceremony before diving down for more.

I am not sure how many tourists this pool attracts, but it certainly attracts a Tawny Fish Owl. A 2004 paper looking at the conflict between this owl and cold-water fish farmers in Taiwan found that owls were an issue at a quarter of the farms observed.
