When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. During the right time of year, the relatively large and deep blue Caribbean Martins accompany both species of swifts as they drink from both the river and the pool. Visiting tourists, getingt to enjoy the water front views, small quaint shops, and restaurants, also get to watch the Tri-colored Herons chasing small crabs and fish. There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island. When you enter the Kozara Floodplain, you can explore both left and right hand side, but going left offers a greater choice of habitats and a larger area.

There isn’t much of a beach right below the resort, but if you wade through the sandy gravel across a submerged spit to a little island just offshore you’ll find not only a small beach but a great snorkelling spot. In Caines, Australia, we enjoyed a wet morning on the Daintree River, with Murray Hunt, of the Dain Tree River Tours. I have saved these last two, for they are indeed my favorite birds of the year.
