The fine folks at the Fish and Wildlife Service are happy to tell the tale: The history of Tinicum Marsh, the largest remaining freshwater tidal wetland Pennsylvania goes back to the first settlements in the region in 1634. The remnant of this once vast tidal marsh is protected by the refuge. But how did such a refuge come to be?

Breezy Point, the westernmost tip of the barrier islands that protect Long Island’s south shore, is also the southwestern most portion of Queens and one of my favorite locations to look for birds. Five Field Sparrows in February in Queens is unprecedented for me but that’s how many I counted in that one flock.

In addition to discovering more vagrant sparrows and warblers, I hope we can also get more coverage for such regions and situations as these: Long Range Pelagic Trips in the Pacific. Expeditions to Remote Parts of Protected Areas. A few trips have been done to those distant waters but we need a lot more. What else is out there?

Pelicans and cormorants breeding at the Mikri often go to the Megali Prespa to fish the cold, deep waters – actually, cormorants to dive for fish and pelicans to wait for the cormorants at the surface to steal their prey. Checking the birds on the stork’s nest, I found both House and Spanish Sparrows.
