Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls. It was here that the comfort began. Black-and-yellow Broadbill. Did I mention them?

There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. On the sheltered side of several jetties I came across small groups of up to seven Hoary-headed Grebes bobbing along. The sea is shallow in most places, hence all of the jetties, and the water is very clear. Feeding frenzy.

It remains a good location for observing birds close to the city and easily accessible by public transport. The distance around the lake is approximately five kilometres and there are limited places to shelter if a storm approaches fast. Some of the sheltered areas were being used by the Chestnut Teal as a roost.
