Does this fish look unhappily surprised or what? Osprey need fuel for their trip south and there are plenty of fish in Queens. There is something about a Savannah Sparrow in dawn light. Either way, it was fun watching it bathe at Rockaway Community Park. This bird flew past me at Edgemere Landfill.

No feeder at all, in fact, no American Goldfinch , no Song Sparrows even unless I go looking for them. A Chipping Sparrow came up to see us once. No more candybox Juncos for me, nor Cassin’s Finches , nor Bohemian Waxwings , nor Black-billed Magpies , nor confiding Red-breasted Nuthatches alighting on me as I fill the feeder.

Las Mesas is the only place I’ve found for which the Black-chinned Sparrow is a reliable species, but this adorable bird, perhaps my favorite local sparrow, always seemed to position himself with some severe backlighting… until this trip. While I can claim full credit for the sparrow, Jonathan got the next one.

By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Spanish Sparrow – still ill-numbered but, since recently, breeding near the city. Long-eared Owl – year round. European Bee-eater and Roller – late spring/summer. My friend B.C,

In an unhurried half-day of birding, we racked up over 90 species, including killers like Denham’s Bustard , Northern Carmine-throated Bee-eater , and Shelley’s Rufous Sparrow. Mind boggling, I answer! Beaudouin’s Snake-Eagle … wow!!

With the proliferation of those erstwhile invaders, House Sparrow , European Starling , and Rock Pigeon , there a lot of homogeneity among these species, which is a shame because what parking lot birds generally lack in beauty they more than make up for in charisma. And of course, there’s the females, gray brown and dark-eyed.

In the end, I opted for the Tamis River floodplain, north of Belgrade, and its fish farms, some non-operational, some selling daily angling licenses. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm.
