Piney Z lake is not large, bisected by a berm that parallels the land-trail as well as a series of fishing earthen fingers that stretch out into the water at regular intervals. Nosing our kayaks between the trunks of bald cypress trees, we watched two Osprey eating fish on their large, stick-filled nest.

Here in Mexico, they call Ospreys “Fishing Eagles” But Tabasco has a second bird of prey that fishes. I wish I could have seen one fishing. On the way to Jonuta Road, Rolando informed me that in this region, Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures are common, but Turkey Vultures are unusual. Go figure!

While I enjoyed the view of alligators and Double-crested Cormorants from the nearby fishing pier, I quickly walked away to distance myself from the blasting country music. Tricolored and Little Blue Herons provided diversity, while an Osprey and group of circling Turkey Vultures were the only shapes that broke the constant blue of the sky.

We have seen a pretty large number of Black Vultures, as well as both the resident, and the migrant Turkey Vultures in the last week. This Amazon Kingfisher is big, but it still had a real mouth full with this fish. Another species in the long name category, would be this Common Chlorospingus.

While I stood there looking for it, a beautiful male Western Tanager showed up for his big chance to be featured on 10000 Birds.
