Being apex predators, when surprised – met at an uncomfortably close range, Brown Bears usually fight. Eurasian jay, Garrulus glandarius.

You won’t find Painted Buntings in Canada—Corey photographed these in Florida, where they are common feeder birds. These findings, published in The Condor , draw from citizen science efforts coordinated by scientists from the University of Alberta and Environment Canada. This presents a conundrum for bird lovers, the authors admit.

At least she contributed to science… My Best Bird of the Year was a Snowy Plover , which I first spotted along the Florida Panhandle. I love participating in citizen science!

For Daurian Redstarts, university campuses can also be crime scenes – one recent paper reports on a Daurian Redstart fledgling being attacked and killed by a magpie on the grounds of Hebei Normal University despite attempts by the female parent to defend the chick. At least as far as the male is concerned.
