Need help identifying a little guy

It had dark, charcoal-gray fur along it's back and a lighter, white-ish belly. It definitely wasn't a cottontail, gray squirrel, possum, muskrat, woodchuck or any of their babies. I really hope it's not an overgrown pet chin that escaped but I can't find any oddball NY critters that fit the bill.
