What is the attraction of fur? Given the fact that Jackson is representing a company that traffics in the fur trade, animal rights activists might get their feathers ruffled by Jackson’s continued associations with a luxe fur brand. I just don't get it. Wear your own damn skin! No way will I add Jennifer Lopez either.

A British student studying in Porto, Portugal, was handing out leaflets in front of "Beigel," a fur shop. ANIMAL is a Portuguese animal rights group that had already been having weekly actions directed at this particular shop, so they were not surprised by the venom of the owner's response. The objective wasn’t even birds, it was fur seals. The day was sunny and calm (a novelty), and the time of year is right for seals. It wasn’t fur seals, or even eciting birding, but it was fun to poke around. Which brings us to yesterday. This time I was determined. A sea hare, something of a novelty for me.

We also passed White-fronted Terns , one of which was being harrassed by an Arctic Skua (Parasitic Jaeger to Americans), which broke off its pursuit when a fish jumped out of the water right beside it. A New Zealand Fur-seal. A mess of Cape Petrels and Northern Giant Petrels under the clear skies of Kaikoura’s Autumn.

Plan B was to hit some of the parks that KL has, and by a happy coincidence a huge park is right next to the central station. Finally my luck changed in the form of a troop of Silvered Langurs , a lovely species of leaf-monkey with dark black fur that contrasts astonishingly with the bright orange fur of youngsters.

Yeah, right. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here. I am checking for darker heads and necks, but the sunset is taking over… “How do you manage to tell them apart,” I ask him.

In the early morning out on the water there were plenty of Fluttering Shearwaters and Australasian Gannets, and close to a salmon farm we found New Zealand Fur Seals as well as Pied Shags, Little Shags and Spotted Shags (I can only assume that kiwis just like calling all cormorants shags because they are all five years old).

We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence. One being that the name is based on the bird’s soft feathers with a texture similar to a mouse’s fur. Another bird one could easily see to be turned into a (slightly evil) cartoon character. As soon as I found out about the shop I went right over and found so many cute items. Approximately 4″ to the top of the head, each puppy is hand sewn of wool blend felt and/or man made fur, polyfil, safety eyes, ribbon, & wire. I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship.
