Swans are the ones we usually look out for, especially since they can and will kill a man when the murderous mood strikes them. But Canada Geese can be brutal too, as can their domestic (or ganky ) kin. These feathered thugs sulk around scamming bread from naive children and despoiling innocent golf courses.

Queen of Spain Fritillary , photographed in mid November Clouded yellow – another common November butterfly For the autumn or winter visitor, the biggest draw is the flock of Lesser Whitefronted Geese that in recent years have been regular and reliable wintering birds on the lake. Such an abundance of wildfowl attracts Peregrines.

Greylag Geese. Soon I hit the brakes for a 60 strong flock of Greylag Geese of the Siberian race rubrirostris grazing near the road. Leaving the lake and driving up the mountains once more, at the top pass I was greeted by an eye-level trumpeting flock of Greylag Geese heading in the direction I had come from. Practicalities.

Sometimes I have a bit of time to kill between meetings but, dressed in business attire, I can’t go romping down a trail and risk showing up at my next meeting muddy and disheveled. Why do I know that ducks and gulls like this particular spot? This leaves me in search of places that I can bird for brief periods without getting dirty.

We went to settle into our room, and since I had about an hour to kill before dinner, I took a quick walk around the property. Still, there are plenty of other birds and animals to see along the way, including Glaucous and other gulls, geese, herds of sheep and Icelandic horses. Finally, we arrived at the Hotel Latrabjarg to check in.

I've googled this and can't find a single critique of the book that mentions that he is making a joke out of animal cruelty. It's not funny at all. Why wasn't it noted by someone somewhere?

The species was seemingly killed off by feather hunters, but then, after years, reappeared at the site of one of the deserted breeding colonies, Torishima Island in Japan. My parents and I visited because we had a morning to kill in the city before we flew out and my mum loves plants and I love birds. Above the lake Grey Herons , Brown-hooded Kingfishers and Pied Kingfishers watched the waters, and on the water were Eurasian Moorhens and Egyptian Geese. Some young Egyptian Geese.

Sandhill Cranes calling somewhere on the south end of the lake, Western Grebes calling to one another, Canada Geese honking away noisily, and somewhere above me, Red-wing Blackbirds roosting in a pine tree called out, in their harsh gargling cry. It was good to be back! I am pretty sure that they were staging here for their trip south.

Straight off the bat we found a Little Grebe and a small flock of distant Cotton Pygmy-geese ! If you have some time to kill, or better yet a tour of Thailand planned, be sure to include it! Set amongst industrial and residential areas near a busy road, these fishponds are a grassy oasis in the city.

Down in the water, I added Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese , and yes, don’t laugh…my first Mallards of the year. On the Drive into the area, a local flooded field had 400 Snow Geese , and couple of Sandhill Cranes. We don’t get great gas mileage any way, but that just killed us.

At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. What is killing them? Yet, what is killing the birds of Lake Karla? There was a Short-toed Eagle ahead, taking flight to be replaced by another ST Eagle. These two were only the first of several I saw. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans.

Who would spend their spare time killing ducks and geese with a pellet gun? Some sicko in Concord, California, apparently. Twenty-eight birds have been found dead in several local parks and police believe that they are all the work of one killer.

Canada Geese and Crows can figure it out, so can Cranes. This represents 6% of the estimated mid-continental spring population of 322,700 birds for the same two decades.

The fact that geese mate for life, and that the mate of the poor goose that was slaughtered would step forward, was enough to make me swear off meat forever, if I hadn’t already. There were a lot of birds about at this early hour and we were very surprised to see seven Magpie Geese fly by. After a very dry start to the year there had been no Magpie Geese observed locally at all. Sadly it had recently been killed and was lying in the garden bed beside the path. They were also devastated.

Do you include objects related to conservation–a copy of Silent Spring , maybe a photo of one of the lime traps that kill thousands of songbirds in Cyprus? I’m not sure what to make of this.

A foot deep by some accounts, it killed what life was left in the forest. They have a hard enough time with Canada Geese. Forests where they roosted were left bare, broken limbs and trees bent out of shape from their weight, hundreds of pigeons roosting on top of pigeons. And, then there were the droppings.
