In a rare afternoon to myself, I had driven across the Florida/Georgia border to pick up a few things in a nearby town (curbside + social distancing), and discovered a historic estate, open to the public, along the road on my way back.

A new study conducted in Athens, Georgia, by National Geographic and the University of Georgia put cameras on house cats allowed outdoors. Thirty percent of the cats killed wild animals, an average of two kills per week.

This northern fox really does look red, unlike the pale, sandy-coloured animals I saw in Georgia in 2019 ( below ). A Red Fox in Georgia, not looking very red I’ve never been to Svalbard, so I haven’t ticked off polar bear, but I have seen brown bears on a number of occasions in both Romania and Bulgaria.

This species has a circumpolar distribution, breeding in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and other islands near South America, a handful of islands in the southern Indian Ocean and a number of New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic islands. Over the weekend, I visited Sapelo Island on the coast of Georgia, catching a glimpse of baby Barn Swallow chicks for the first time since my summer years on Kennebago. Like Savannah Sparrow, the type specimen of Swamp Sparrow was collected in Georgia. Swamp Sparrow ( Melospiza georgiana ) is an uncommon species in southeast Florida where it reaches the southeastern terminus of its regular wintering range, becoming markedly more numerous and easily seen as one travels north along the peninsula.

On February 17th they rescued 26 Pit Bulls near Sandersville, Georgia. The ASPCA continually does amazing work on behalf of our animal companions. The dogs had been left to starve, no food, water or even shelter from freezing temperatures. They also had signs of neglect, broken bones, wounds and infections.

One of the two, Krüper’s Nuthatch , is only found in Turkey, Russia, Georgia, and on Lesbos. Two others, the Eastern Rock Nuthatch and the Western Rock Nuthatch are clearly distinct species but are so similar that they may as well be the same species. That leaves only two species with a decent range and a distinct look.
