Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. I raised 4 of the cranes shot this year– chicks that still had much of their brown plumage. Nobody needs to eat them.

The Natural History section points out that Red-tailed Pennants hold their wings flat or slightly lowered, while the skimmers tend to raise their wings. I’ve found Giff Beaton’s D ragonflies and Damselflies of Georgia and the Southeast very useful whenever I travel south.

On February 17th they rescued 26 Pit Bulls near Sandersville, Georgia. “It’s bad enough that these dogs were treated cruelly and raised in horrible conditions,&# said Tim Rickey, the ASPCA Senior Director of Field Investigations and Response.
