In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestationcrates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. I work with the hogs every day, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with gestationcrates,” he said.
The McDonald’s Corporation said on Monday that it would begin working with its pork suppliers to phase out the use of so-called gestationalcrates, the tiny stalls in which sows are housed while pregnant. For the full story, check out this link to the New York Times article.
Update 10/13/24: Volunteers gathered outside an Aldi store in Dallas, Texas, using megaphones and a life-size gestationcrate to take a stand for mother pigs. Flyers were handed out to shoppers, and a leaflet was given to the store manager to pass along to corporate leadership.
They do appear to wish to put an end to what they believe are the worst abuses of institutionalized animal agriculture, such as gestationcrates and veal crates, but that's hardly a call to end animal agriculture. But I see no evidence of that and I'm not sure how Parker comes to that conclusion.
This week, Bon Appétit Management Company vowed that by 2015, none of the three million pounds of pork we serve a year (including 800,000 pounds of bacon) will come from hogs confined in gestationcrates. It’s time to send the message that cost is not the only important consideration.
Consider some of the victories: On November 5th, 2002, more than two and a half million Floridians voted "Yes" on Amendment 10 to amend the state constitution and prohibit the use of gestationcrates , narrow metal cages where breeding pigs are kept for most of their lives.
