My name is Kalu Afasi, I am a birding guide from Ghana, a country in West Africa. In the more recent past, I have founded my own company, MALIMBE TOURS, also known as GHANA BIRD TOURS. I chose the name Malimbe Tours because the first bird I ever set eyes on through a pair of binoculars was one of our dazzling malimbe species.

White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes, Bonkro, Ghana. They diverged at approximately the same time as the rockjumpers (two quite unique bird species endemic to Southern Africa and now in their own family), and as a result for a while were even placed in the same family. For me and my birding opportunities, this means Accra in Ghana. Still, if you find yourself with the chance to visit Ghana, grab it forcefully. But at the end of last year, I eventually confirmed one in the University of Ghana, Botanic Gardens, Accra. Sad, but there you go.

The wonderful family Meropidae contains 27 dazzling species, of which Africa is endowed with no less than 20 species, the balance occurring across Asia and with one as far afield as Australia. We have both resident and migratory species, and this post will briefly discuss each of the 20 species of African bee-eaters.
