It’s under the jurisdiction of the Exotic Species Division of the Department of Environmental Protection, which is a division of US Fish and Wildlife. In Oregon you can’t own any “dangerous” wild animals, but you can get a special permit for a service monkey and anyone can fill their backyard with giraffes. Are we fed up yet?

A Chinese Pond Heron … … and the same species pretending to be a giraffe. That is even though the species was designated as a second-level national key protected species in 2021, meaning that keeping it at home is no longer permitted in China ( source ).

The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill.

The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area. Bigger than the African Buffalo or the American Bison, it is the largest land animal after the Elephant, Rhino, the Hippopotamus and the Giraffe. Good to know.

This country boasts over 1,000 bird species, vast wildernesses, a superb network of protected areas, the greatest concentration of large game and predators on the planet, excellent lodges and friendly people. A question I am frequently asked by birders and wildlife enthusiasts is: “ if I only visit Africa once, where should I go ?”
