Authorities are concerned that a man spotted wearing a goat outfit and cavorting with actual wild Mountain Goats in the mountains of Utah could be in danger when hunting season opens in September. And, no, I am not making this up.

Goat Island, off New Zealand’s Northland, was an amazing diving location without any birds. The dive was a gentle one, as dive goes, with a lot of kelp to get under to hunt for interesting fish, lobsters, sponges and rays. But that is actually by the by, because diving is its own reward. Hiwihiwi ( Chironemus marmoratus ).

It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. Secondly, New Zealand had already experienced on wave of extinction due to the introduction or rats and human hunting. So that New Zealand would end up with quite a few species of animal not originally found here is hardly surprising of itself. But hedgehogs?

And some of the extinctions were of small animals, like the many dwarf goats and elephants in the Mediterranean. As climates are transformed, habitats plundered, and nonnative fauna carried to virgin hunting grounds, extinction rates are increasing. We’ve lost perhaps 200 birds that we know of since 1500.

Sure, we try not to introduce snakes, rats, cats, goats, pigs, and a host of other creatures to isolated islands. Most people oppose large-scale, indiscriminate, hunting of birds but it still happens all over the world. And it is a rate of extinction that is speeding up!

Our farthest planned trip to the south of the island was to the Argiolas winery, so we planned to hunt down the living lawn ornaments that afternoon: after all, nothing like a bit of wine to make the colors brighter. Apparently, this is a not-uncommon tourist request.

European Red Foxes were brought into Australia in the 1850′s for recreational hunting and soon spread rapidly. We have seen them on remote beaches hunting shorebirds and taking their eggs and they have been responsible for much of the egg loss in breeding Pied Oystercatchers along the Broome coast.
