Last year, two Serbian ornithologists were guiding a group of French birders and, prior to their return to the airport, the guides phoned me to enquire how to reach Beljarica – they had dipped the White-tailed Eagle! Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Easily enough, they got it here.

I was fortunate to spend time scanning open fields, wetlands, and the inlet separating Hong Kong from China with this large group of friendly and avid avian observers. And even though transportation is so easy and inexpensive, prepare to walk a lot. An early group of about 15 from the hide at Mai Po. So don’t be afraid!

Another really good feature of Singapore is the excellent public transport system. The Singapore Sports Hub is located on a piece of land where the Kallang River and the Geylang River meet and there are groups of trees around the complex that offer some good birding. It is very easy to get around the island and it is also very cheap.

Crisscrossed by 24″ pipelines transporting oil from numerous offshore platforms, oil companies exercised the strongest presence here. After a brief period of no activity on the shore, a small group of Willets in fresh plumage cruised in. A couple of Black Skimmers flew past just as we were getting into a decent viewing position.

Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. Last Saturday we spent the day at Herdsman Lake in Perth due to a sudden work trip for Grant, which got extended over the weekend and I was able to join him.

Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference. There was a group of Australian Wood Ducks on the riverbank and Superb Fairywrens in the reeds nearby. The first section of the walk is flat and along the river and passes some housing.
