I got my first pets, mice and guinea pigs, when I was 8. For these folks, I recommend a nontraditional pet like a rat or a guinea pig. Guinea pigs also do not bite, unlike hamsters and gerbils which can tend to be nippy. I believe between ages 4 and 8 is ideal, although older kids can also benefit.
