Prior to the 1930s, hamsters were pretty much in the wild. Now, one million hamsters are kept as pets, an increase of 41 percent since 2001. Sadly, though, some 200,000 hamsters were used for research in the United States in 2000, third behind rats and mice. Tags: hamsters. Interesting article.

Pet sales would be banned altogether, except for the sale of pet fish. All companion animals including dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, and lizards would be considered as pets. I can't believe the pet industry would allow such legislation without a fight.

Emmie loves her pets. But most of all Emmie loves Hamlet, her hamster. Emmie is fourteen years old and has loved several hamsters since she was seven: Carnie, Ophelia, Ichilles and now Hamlet. Carnie, the first hamster, was the tragic one. She was never happier playing with the pet. She has done this before.
