New Zealand has one of the direst records of extinction is modern times, second on really to Hawaii in terms of bird species lost. Of particular interest would be the commitment of the islanders to give up having cats as pets. The project is very much in the early stages, but it is one to watch with interest.

Tails Of Aloha is an all volunteer Animal Assisted Therapy Organization, located on Oahu in the state of Hawaii, with animals on all of the major Hawaiian Islands. We also do foster homes for misplaced pets and pets whose owners have been placed into nursing homes, long term hospital care or hospice.

The feral cats were thought to have arrived as pets during early European settlement and then more were introduced to control rabbits and rodents, but now they inhabit all of Australia including offshore islands and are responsible for a high percentage of native species loss. They are incredibly cunning and not easily trapped.

If you are afraid of spiders, you might want to get a pet Streaked Spiderhunter. The White-rumped Shama is a South Asia species – consequently, the HBW mostly discusses its introduced population in Hawaii. I am only joking! Birds should be free. The White-crowned Forktail is the largest among them.
