Occasionally I host wildlife rehabilitator vent-fests, where I post a question on Facebook and duly note the rehabber responses. Today’s topic comes from Tracy Anderson in Hawaii: what was the strangest container (or method of transport) in which you have received wildlife? However… Tracy starts us off. “A What are the odds?
Birders know that some of the finest birding locations in the country are on federal land , which include national parks , wildlife refuges , forests , monuments , and seashores , among others. The Collective added six new states in the past three years, but none have eclipsed the century mark: Wisconsin ( 74 ), Utah (55), Hawaii (38), Oklahoma (18), Rhode Island (9), and Connecticut (5). For example, my list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for birding includes an excellent location in Minnesota ( Minnesota Valley NWR ).
Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed downlisting it from “endangered” to “threatened.”. Habitat has been improved and conserved in some areas, though Hawaii’s increasing human population has made that a challenge. Several national parks, national wildlife refuges, and state lands host significant populations.
This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles. Amazing stuff.
Take Hawaii, for example. Fish and Wildlife Service, the American Bird Conservancy, and other groups teamed up to translocate 50 of the birds to another island, Laysan. Fish and Wildlife Service). **And Fearing that a natural disaster, introduced species, or disease could wipe this fragile population out, the U.S.
Something of the same sort may be in the works for Hawaii, with scientists considering unprecedented measures for the best of reasons. Since then, mosquitoes have flourished and begun to pose a serious danger to wildlife, including birds. In the meantime, you might want to book a trip to Hawaii to see ‘i’wi while you still can.
Some states have no species at all, not even a pigeon, crow, or sparrow: Hawaii , Utah , Nebraska , Oklahoma , Minnesota , Iowa , Wisconsin , Kentucky , West Virginia , Mississippi , Alabama , Connecticut , and Rhode Island. West Virginia ranks 44th, Hawaii ranks 45th, and Rhode Island ranks 48th. And so on….

Hes previously poked albatrosses with sticks in Hawaii, provided target practice for gulls in California, chased monkeys up and down hills Uganda, wrestled sharks in the Bahamas and played God with grasshopper genetics in Namibia.
He has been at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary (or Zealandia, as it is persisting in calling itself) for the last month, entertaining Wellingtonians and visitors to the Rugby World Cup (which ended favourably for the host nation on Sunday I am happy to relate. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity.
I ended up looking for photographs of Peregrine hack sites, captive breeding aviaries, Hawaii tropical forest, and the California Condors of the Grand Canyon on the Internet. There is a beautiful photograph of a Peregrine Falcon on the cover and smaller photographs of Hawaiian Crow and California Condor on the back cover, but I want more.
Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) wants to eradicate all of the mice on Midway. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago.

But even with Hawaii, there are many U.S.
The addition of Hawaii eliminated any notion that the ABA Area is defined by geography or ecology and the inclusion of the territories of Washington D.C. Virgin Islands not part of the American Birding Association’s ABA Area ? and Midway Atoll means statehood cannot be a prerequisite.
I often like to poke fun at how dangerous the wildlife of Australia is, as ever since the giant man-eating Haast’s Eagle went extinct the land life on New Zealand has been mostly harmless. But the thing is, while the animals may not want to kill you, it sometimes feels as if the land itself does.
Many are Hawaiian endemics : Hawaii has long been, and continues to be, the hotspot for endangered birds in the United States. Fish and Wildlife Service’s ECOS (Environmental Conservation Online System), an online gateway to mountains of information about endangered species. The links are to the U.S.
But only two states have more than one bird named for them: Hawaii and California, with nine and seven extant and eponymous species, respectively.
