These dogs are homeless through no fault of their own, and by rescuing one of them, you may just save their life. Do you have time to toilet train a puppy, and feed it several times a day? If you’re planning on adding a dog to your family, it’s possible you’ll find your new family member at the local animal shelter or humane society.

A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. It’s a fictitious account of the story narrated by a young boy named Cody who lost his beloved puppy to an unexplained ailment. Today we have a lovely guest post from author Deborah Blumenthal.

Some people are seeking purebred animals or puppies and think these are not available in shelters. Often these puppies or kittens are not placed in homes, and end up in the shelter. Puppies are great but often people are much happier getting a dog who is older, and whose size and temperament is a known quantity.

FiXiT is dedicated to coming up with solutions to reduce the number of homeless animals by helping people get their animals get spayed/neutered. Every year 3-4 million dogs and cats die in animal shelters in the United States because there aren’t enough homes for them.

But a puppy isn't going to mend your relationship with your child any more than a child is going to mend your relationship with your partner. If you want to give a life-long home to a homeless, domesticated animal and you are fully capable of doing so, fantastic! It takes some work, but I committed to that work and I'm happy to do it.
