Sure, it’s been well over a month since I returned from my fun-filled, family vacation to Honduras but that doesn’t mean that it’s too late to blog about it, right? And, without a doubt, one of the biggest highlights of our time in Honduras was our outing to Parque Nacional Marino Cayos Cochinos.

The one case that could have been an actual Turkey was a bird spotted in Honduras, where they may or may not have been, by our friend Christopher Columbus. The chance that this was a real Turkey are not great, and the chance that Columbus actually brought breeding stock from Honduras to Spain is not great, so maybe, maybe not.

Some ways to help this incredible bird include supporting the Macaw Recovery Network , any efforts to protect and reforest habitat from eastern Honduras to eastern Panama and northern Colombia, and never buying a Great Green Macaw. Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata).

The first is that the illustrations by Dale Dyer are based, and largely seem to be the same, as the illustrations for his previous guide Birds of Central America: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama (co-authored with Andrew Vallely, PUP, 2018). Fantasy is the key word here. Doing this work takes time!

There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. The Bay of Islands is a very popular area for tourists, both those looking for natural history and for human history.
