Formed in 2007, this organization seeks to promote the humanetreatment of animals by promoting effective animal sanctuary management. Led by professionals who have experience with organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States, the group is definitely not new to the issues surrounding animals worldwide.
I'm sure we could do a much better job of ensuring the humanetreatment of our laboratory animals--but at this point it's very difficult even to start the discussion. It "guarantees humanetreatment?" Isn't it better for science, and more humane, to use just one animal? Maybe on paper.
We pay lip service to more humanetreatment of the animals that we eat, but how many of us look beyond the label on the package of chicken cutlets? Kristof is attuned to issues of human suffering and injustice. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen any time soon.
In any case, which various political strategies would be most efficient for achieving humanetreatment of animals is an empirical question. It’s a matter of expending one’s resources in accordance with one’s values. Vegetarianism is not obviously the best strategy, and its worth would have to be shown.
