I'm sure we could do a much better job of ensuring the humane treatment of our laboratory animals--but at this point it's very difficult even to start the discussion. At least he admits that a better job of humane treatment could be done and that there should be a discussion about it. It's the last line that grabs me.

Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. Tags: animal cruelty proposition 2 cattle farm animal welfare agribusiness. No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there.
