They believe you can take a life that doesn't want to be taken in a humaneway, and I don't agree. It’s how we treat humans, too. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The needs of the cow aren't even mentioned.
Using a mousetrap can be justified by defense of self or property (though there are more humaneways of getting rid of pests). Eating meat and using mousetraps are as different (morally speaking) as night and day. Eating meat cannot be so justified. Nobody needs to eat meat in order to survive or flourish.
So, even if animals are killed painlessly and raised for food in humaneways, it is wrong to kill them. It is also probable that very subnormal adult human beings do not. KBJ: Martin forgot about the human beings who lack a right to life, including infants. The subject is a large and controversial one.
He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely).
