When I last visited the town almost 10 years ago, it had a Wild West feel, and Wikipedia claims that it is “an important location for trade with Myanmar, in both legal and illegal goods and services” but it seemed pretty tame to me this time. min/h) in rainy day.

The species was bred at the zoo of Memphis, Tennesee ( source ). Similar to the (fortunately now gradually changing) situation among humans in China, these birds seem to prefer males over females. So, I can only give you the sanitized version of the joke, in which humans have been replaced by birds. I am sure Elvis liked it.

Everyone talks about human rights and there exists so many groups that are either governmental or non-governmental who work toward that cause. The simple fact that the increasing human population obliges us to destroy and alter natural ecosystems where the birds find home. And these are just the direct assaults against birds!

The reasons that these ten have been selected is to illustrate some of the myriad reasons that Africa’s birds are being driven to extinction; from commercial overfishing, powerline collisions, illegal trade, poisoning, traditional medicine usage, overgrazing and conversion of specialized habitats into agricultural land.

Not all habitat change is due to humans; there is Chestnut Blight destroying American Chestnuts in the early 1900s, and the more recent Dutch Elm disease. It’s a very mixed chapter.

Gisela Kaplan has written a book about the species, and how they seem unperturbed by humans: “It’s one of their most successful defense strategies. It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. It is certainly not true that writing a post about Australia and not mentioning flying foxes is illegal, but why take the risk?
