Questionable Practices at the Calgary Zoo

Critter News

Another animal dies at the Calgary Zoo and more questions are being raised about their practices. I don't track zoos, but this seems like an unusually high number of casualties. They were a part of the zoo’s breeding program for the rare birds. In November 2008, a virus killed a 15-month-old Asian elephant calf named Malti.

How cold is it?

10,000 Birds

It’s cold enough in Chicago—where our high temperature for the day was –2 degrees Farenheit—that the polar bear at the zoo spent the day inside. True, few hardy human souls are dedicated/crazy enough to go birding in these conditions (did I mention a windchill of –35?); Glad you asked. It’s cold enough to freeze vodka.

All an owl knows is that when they stare at something, they’re trying to figure out if they can kill and eat it.

Laughing at you, not with you

10,000 Birds

The author of the eBird entry for Elliot’s Laughingthrush (various locations, Qinghai and Sichuan) seems almost a bit contemptuous of the bird, remarking that on its habit of “scrounging for human-made trash” I thought that is more of a gull thing to do? The shame would kill them.

In a news report from 2009, the DNA quoted a senior Forest Department official who feared that the poachers must have killed around 20 tigers in the region in just five months. Earlier, a large number of villagers were being killed by tigers: 11 in 2006, 13 in 2007 and more than 26 during 2008.

The Lost Macaw of Cuba

10,000 Birds

Islands, with their high levels of endemism and specialization, are particularly fragile and vulnerable to human activity. This bird was in serious trouble by the mid-19th century due to the adults being killed for food and young being taken for pets. Its last stronghold was the Zapata Swamp in western Cuba.
