In addition to spotting exciting new species in Florida, including the rare Snail Kite, travel across the country brought me into contact with birds in Oregon, California, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alabama, and more. 2018 proved to be one of my best birding years ever. Not so much. And the third trimester?

The bold gray-and-white birds know what humans are good for and that is as a source of food! They are also found in the mountainous interior west as far south as Arizona and New Mexico, as well as in the far northern reaches of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and New England.

The general public is out and about, birds and animals are raising their young, and human/wildlife interaction is at its peak. Why is there no state or federal money available to care for federally protected species? It’s August, and first on the menu is: Fried Rehabber. Summer is high season. God, we’re a selfish bunch, aren’t we?”

What do you say when someone tells you they will be spending the summer in the Lower Michigan Peninsula? Recently it has also been documented as breeding in Wisconsin, Ontario, and the Upper Michigan Peninsula, but those birds are few and not always accessible. For mankind to snatch away a species’ very existence is wrong on so many levels that I can’t begin to explain them. However, despite our best efforts to wipe them off the face of the earth, some of the more vulnerable species have managed to hang on. is going to have to go to Michigan or Wisconsin.
