Michigan's removal of the bald eagle and gray wolf from the list will be the most significant change in species protection the state has seen in years. The delisting would not open the door for hunters to kill wolves, the state's DNR notes. Killing would be permitted only if a wolf posed a direct threat to humans.

It isn’t like not killing the cat is in any way humane, considering the number of animals it will kill over time. That part of the carnivore landscape is taken by other animals.
It is only the prejudice of our species that justifies culling the deer population while protecting our own. Beyond that, though, is the tragedy of the doe’s sole contact with a human: a moment that could have initiated a communion between the two was instead reduced to carnage. Who wiped out the wolves and mountain lions?
There is also a third element, only hinted at in the opening–the environmental and scientific necessity of gathering this data to document the importance of keeping the Pacific Northwest waters healthy and uncontaminated by human elements. Fox does an excellent job balancing these three elements, keeping the emphasis on the birds.
Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for.
