And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. It was not a pretty sight.

In German, if you are a rodent and you are smaller than – say – a human hand, you’re a mouse. However, they tend to be rather secretive due to hunting pressure (by humans, not too many wolves yet in Germany), and are therefore a rare sight especially in densely populated areas. No “gophers” etc.

But it wasn’t founded to serve as a refuge for human refugees, but animal ones, specifically elephants. The park was created as much to protect the local communities from marauding elephants with a hatred of dangerous humans and a lack of interest in the differences between nations as it was to protect the elephants.

My human kept me in an enclosed porch because, let’s face it, I was crawling with fleas and pretty filthy. We dogs are wired by nature to be humans’ companions. After all, dogs have the longest history of co-habitation with humans of any animal. But there’s a special bond between a dog and its human rescuer.
