The invasive Burmese Python ( Python molurus ) is well established in the Florida Everglade. Another species of Python, the African Python ( Python sebae ) has established a small population in the 2,877-acre Bird Drive Area (BDA) in South Florida. The best chance to catch a Python is during a cold front.
The entire scene from which that bit of dialogue comes, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail , is one of my favorite scenes ever from a movie. The absurdity of mob rule is summed up well, I think, by the idea of a fully healthy human male saying out loud, as evidence of a woman being a witch, that “She turned me into a newt!
Even the Latin species name soror (“sister”) indicates the similarity to another pitta species (blue-naped). The eBird description of the Small Niltava starts with the surprisingly dull statement that “size distinguishes this species from other niltavas” Who would have thought.
While not on the scale of bird migration, it is routinely and somewhat lazily described as the biggest annual migration of humans in the world. This species seems to enjoy being in mixed flocks with the White-shouldered Starling. The Spring Festival – or Chinese New Year – is a big period for traveling in China.
This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. The Python Caves. The Python Caves, as you’ll recall since you certainly read my article (and in some cases actually did, and even told me so and bought the book!) This means it has different species, and adds to the biological diversity of the park. Egyptian Fruit Bats. This is as close as we got.
But there are, Ollerton thinks, 1,380 bird species that may be pollinators (and some 20,000 bird-pollinated flowers), and part of the purpose of his new book, the impressive (and delightful!) Ollerton’s penultimate chapter includes some dismal statistics about recent extinctions, and endangered and vulnerable bird species.
Still, one source states that this is the second-rarest of all crane species. What methods are effective to protect an endangered crane species? And now for something completely different (Monty Python). Other individuals seem to have seen Saturday Night Fever a few times too often and now think they are John Travolta.
The main reason seems to be a better sharing of the workload in the more equal same-sex couples – something that is hardly irrelevant for humans. eBird seems to be critical of this species’ work ethics, stating that “it flies lazily over open fields or marshes” Maybe the owl is just sleepy, not lazy.
For this reason, the species is evaluated as Vulnerable.” The Rufous-tailed Robin used to be called Swinhoe’s Robin but apparently, somebody decided that there were already too many bird species (6, according to the HBW) named after him. The Eurasian Hobby was another notable raptor of the month.
