A Guan was collected in 1876 in a mangrove forest near the border between Peru and Ecuador. There were reasons to think that the White-winged Guan had been extirpated by over-hunting. These conditions offered easy access to hunters in a habitat where a bird as large as a Guan would have little chances to hide or scape.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
