Kudos for Russian leader Vladimir Putin for stopping the slaughter of seals. Maybe Canada can learn something from the former KGB agent and avid hunter about compassion. Conservation groups have staged protests in 20 Russian cities this week, demanding an end to the slaughter.

Originally a hunting term, the Big Five were the most dangerous and prized targets of the great white hunters on safari. Their relentless slaughter for ivory and trophies diminished the population from tens of millions to the less than 500,000 existing today.

I won’t pick a fight with hunters, as long as they eat what they shoot and don’t use lead ammunition. The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. One hopes this is the direction in which all killing contests are headed. Plain old fashioned Fun.”.

After scrolling through piles of furious emails regarding a recent blog about Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest , it seemed to me that all of us needed Dr. Phil. The subject was not hunting; it was contest killing. And being anti-hunting does not weaken our position when it comes to contest killing.”. It will never happen.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. They are created to be slaughtered. The choice isn't the wild or the farm. Yes, that's true.
