Astute readers, er, well, readers with any brain activity at all, will probably have realized by now that the lump was a Great Horned Owl ! I got out of the car and watched the owl for awhile.

As I’ve posted before they are efficient and merciless hunters. And they cough up pellets just like hawks and owls! They are aided by excellent binocular vision that lines up with their dagger-like bill. This one was so good it caught two fish at a time (just once though). They are true generalists.

It was dark when we reached our accommodation in the hillside village of Pachna, where we were greeted by a duet of Scops Owls. According to the taxonomists, these weren’t regular Scops Owls ( Otus scops ) but the endemic Cyprus Scops Owl ( Otus cyprius ). It’s now on the official quarry list on the island.

Further north, we slow down by the ruins of an old farm… and yes, a Little Owl greets us with its ‘smiling’ face. The intensity of experience is not the same, but, e.g. focusing on a single bird and trying to solve the puzzle… or finding the rarest owl of India , that was a mind-blowing one. Common Cranes. More of a hunt?

One eyed birds often get put down or aren’t released but they can survive and can be fierce hunters, like this big female Redtail. Heermann’s Gull bills can appear in Great Horned Owl pellets. Red-tailed Hawks eat worms. This one gets up early and finds them on the wet sidewalk. Redtail as Turkey Vulture ?
