Great Horned Owl Along Fellsmere Grade Road

Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area , which is open to vehicles not driven by hunters on Mondays and Thursdays only. Astute readers, er, well, readers with any brain activity at all, will probably have realized by now that the lump was a Great Horned Owl ! I got out of the car and watched the owl for awhile.

It was dark when we reached our accommodation in the hillside village of Pachna, where we were greeted by a duet of Scops Owls. According to the taxonomists, these weren’t regular Scops Owls ( Otus scops ) but the endemic Cyprus Scops Owl ( Otus cyprius ). It’s now on the official quarry list on the island.

During our tenure there, we had exceptional views of Africa’s largest ( Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl ) and smallest ( African Scops Owl ) owls, the largest bird on the planet, not neglecting numerous hornbills, sunbirds and weavers. Hunter’s Sunbird. Greyish Eagle-Owl. Dark Chanting Goshawk.

A winter miscellany

So though I visited Lynford, I didn’t see a Hawfinch on this occasion as I wasn’t there at the right time, though I did meet a number of hopeful Hawfinch hunters (HHHs), none of whom reported a sighting. Forest Bathing

From what I’ve been hearing, sport hunters are chomping at the bit to also return to the forest in droves. A pair of Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls called to each other, driving the passerine population into a panic. It was difficult to ignore the din caused by the pygmy-owls, and eventually we caved to curiosity and followed our ears.
