In an effort to better understand the “human dimension” of its conservation efforts, several surveys were conducted, including the National Birdwatching Survey (NBS).
My mind wandering off: A century ago, birding meant hunting birds and we stole the term from hunters – it may be time to steal another one: “Lord John came abreast of me, however, and his face was more grave than was his wont. There are some 56-57 species worldwide which hardly presents a challenge.
It is estimated that there were more than 1000 Great Bustards in the northern lowlands of Serbia at the beginning of the 20th century, but back then these birds were also present in the south and the east of the country. Bustards are very susceptible to any kind of disturbance and, naturally, hunters like to shoot.
Cocker presents Eurasian Larks as a prime example of one of the recurring themes of the book, our culture’s tendency to cherish a bird in poetry and myth and to simultaneously exploit, even ravish, the actual bird. Changes in Pennsylvania’s forests, farmlands, wetlands, and grasslands are traced from the time of the first European settlers, when forest predominated, to the present period, with 11 percent of the state developed, some wetland loss, some wetland gain, and the danger of pollution in riparian habitats.
The Red-breasts tend to keep together, though within the White-front flocks, and it always takes some time with the scope to pick them out, even when there are hundreds of birds present. From what I’ve been hearing, sport hunters are chomping at the bit to also return to the forest in droves. These fierce predators would much rather grab a juicy cicada than a bird; but with those oversized, powerful feet – I’m fairly certain they would take the opportunity if presented with it.
Since I was mapping-in human ‘territories’ or home ranges, and trying to figure out how tropical hunter-gatherers found their way around the landscape, the mechanisms of migration were interesting to me. (It And, much of the research being done in those days was about the mechanisms. But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.
Baicich, one of our most passionate proponents of American birding conservation — misguided though he is on the topic of the Duck Stamp — has identified the Bold Ideas presented on the Conserving the Future site that deal specifically with birds and birding issues.
