I’m a wildlife rehabilitator, so I’m always ranting about things like eagles being lead poisoned or songbirds being slaughtered by outdoor and feral cats. I’ve received stacks of hate mail from hunters who use lead bullets (as opposed to copper), outdoor cat owners, etc etc etc. For a minute, she had me. Uh-oh, I thought.

I won’t pick a fight with hunters, as long as they eat what they shoot and don’t use lead ammunition. The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. Plain old fashioned Fun.”. One hopes this is the direction in which all killing contests are headed.

Contest killing – where individuals or teams gun down as many of a single species as they can within a specific time period, with prizes going to the winner(s) – is legal all over the country. The hunters who do not eat their crows) “are providing a smorgasbord for other wildlife!”

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. They are created to be slaughtered. The choice isn't the wild or the farm. It's not pretty.
